Based on Veblen's work on social classes and consumption, this study includes a theoretical analysis of the ways in which consumption habits are affected by the social context through Veblen's concepts of status and status hierarchy and how these effects are shaped on the axis of social status. The starting point of the study is the relational dimension of the concept of status, which is the central determinant of the conceptual framework offered by Veblen's theory in the sociology of consumption in order to address the consumption in the social context. In this framework, the study deals with class analysis and the emergence of the concepts of ‘conspicuous leisure’, ‘conspicuous consumption’ and ‘conspicuous waste’, which are important components of this analysis, and the processes of their institutionalization as consumption habits. From this point of view, the position of the accumulation of property and wealth, which Veblen observed in the Modern Period and which continues to exist until today, in determining social status and the consumption habits shaped on the axis of this position are discussed.
